PDDCS members receive Peterborough Telegraph Awards

Last week, the Peterborough Evening Telegraph held their Education Awards. Local people are invited to nominate worthy canditates and the PDDCS is pleased to share the news that two youth members this year were recognised for their achievements. A summary of their nominations are below. Well done!

Chloe Peacock was also nominated in this category as despite many complicated medical conditions she has always been a delight to teach. Outside of school, Chloe took up her passion, gymnastics and through hard work and dedication she is now at Squad Level and frequently competes. She has won many medals ending last year as Junior Club champion and is hoping to get into the County Squad this year. Not content with this, she has recently taken up Taekwondo and has just passed her first grading.

Tara Forkin received a nomination for Best School/Pupil Contribution to the Community. She completed British Sign Language levels 1, 2 and 3 within 2 years. The Level 3 course (equivalent to an A Level course) was completed during her GCSE studies. With mentoring from a deaf BSL tutor, Tara was offered a BSL teaching post despite her young age, only 17. Tara has also been a very active member of the PDDCS for a number of years. She has been involved in various projects, including a Design Technology enterprise project creating and selling a range of promotional items. She also very courageously undertook a sky dive with two deaf peers just six weeks after her cochlear implant, raising over £4,000 for charity.

PDDCS Youth Group member Tara Forkin is in line for a major national award after being among the youngest ever to attain the advanced BSL level three qualification. The Evening Telegraph has the full story.

Tara, now 16, also made the news a few years back when she went London to address parliament.. Another trip to London beckons now - we hope she gets the vote this time.

Signature are the national organisation responsible for sign language development and qualifications. They will be holding the ceremony  on November 18th.

Tara's dedication stands out - well done Tara and thank you for all you do for PDDCS! Good Luck!

PDDCS in the Evening Telegraph..Disappointing Coverage

The society made it into the Peterborough Evening Telegraph today with a picture of the Mayor and one of our members. Its a good picture.

The coverage of the event itself is a disappointment though. The article omits nearly all the details. Probably most disappointing is that the ET didn't speak to the society to get any information despite phone calls to encourage them and there are no contact details for interested families to get in touch...Maybe it was a space issue.

We called the ET this morning when the article appeared on the Peterborough Today website and politely asked for our contact details to be included - unfortunately that doesn't seem to have happened either - it was too late for the paper version.

While of course we are grateful to the ET for all their coverage in the past of other events and for sending a photographer to take a picture to this one - the society is left disappointed at opportunities lost.
