Wembley Stadium Deaf-Friendly Football Day Pictures

Peterborough United's Deaf Youth football team went to Wembley Stadium on Sunday 27th July to take part in football training and matches against teams from Kent Deaf Children's Society and Brentford FC.

With the impressive stadium looming magnificently in the background, players aged 4-14 joined in with some drills then some five-a-side matches with mixed teams. At the end, Peterborough United took on Brentford and Kent and won the match. Well done to the players from all the teams who took part.

Following the football, the children and parents were taken on a tour of Wembley Stadium with BSL interpretation.

PDDCS would like to thank Louise Henley from KDCS for her help in the organisation; the Skills and Drill Coaches, Ben Lampert and Tash Applegate for coaching the kids; Peterborough United for provision of kits and the minibus; Powerleague for the use of the pitches, Anna Baker for interpreting and Wembley for the tour. PDDCS would also like to extend thanks to all parents and carers for bringing the children and the children themselves for demonstrating their abilities and enthusiasm.

In the picture above, all the people taking part in one of the tours are seen with the FA Cup. Our goalkeeper Harry Bidwell's Father holding the cup.

Peterborough United Deaf Teams bring home a trophy from National Deaf Youth Football Tournament

The whole squad as mascot celebrate at the end of the tournament
Players, coaches, parents and administrators of the Peterborough United Deaf Youth teams returned from the NDCS National tournament on Sunday with smiles on their faces after impressive performances from all the Posh teams involved.

The two under-12 teams, White and Blue, dominated their respective groups and met in the semi-final. White progressed from that match to the final and won the tournament after beating Brentford 6-0.

The under-16 teams also got to the semi-final where they also lost to the eventual winners, Hamilton Lodge School 6-3.

All the teams performed very well and received praise from the tournament organisers who heralded the Peterborough teams as among the most technically able they had seen in years. Tom Lyons of NDCS said:

"I am incredibly impressed with how quickly you have grown and established the Peterborough team in little over a year. I didn’t get to watch too much of the tournament, but I must say I think the standard of the U12’s and U16’s teams generally was higher than I have seen before.

"The Peterborough U12 team was almost certainly the strongest team I’ve seen over the past few years in terms of technical ability. The attitude and endeavour also appeared fantastic!"

Peterborough United Chairman Darragh McAnthony retweeted news of the teams reaching the semi-final stages and sent this tweet once the final whistle had blown in the under-12's final.

Andy Palmer, PDDCS committee member who oversees the deaf football project, said: "The main thing about playing football is having fun and it was good to see all the players and their families enjoying the day."

Under 12 White Celebrate
"It is a real bonus and quite an achievement for us to have come this far in only a year. That year has seen us become part of the Peterborough United family, hold weekly sessions and help many players develop their football and social skills. To have three teams and 40 people on the coach to Reading was also very encouraging for the future of deaf football in our area."

"I would like to thank our coaches; Qadeer Hussain, Tash Applegate and Rob Neal for all their input and the knowledge of the game that they have imparted to our players."

"I would also like to thank Jack Hunt School for their continued and valuable support in allowing us to use their facilities. Finally I want to thank both the players for their effort, the fun and pride they bring into our lives and their parents for their fantastic support."

Anyone 18-years-old or under is welcome to come to the deaf friendly football sessions which are held every Monday in term-time at Jack Hunt School (please check first).  Below are the tournament results:

Deaf Futsal (indoor football) Now in Peterborough ... come along on Wednesdays

Deaf Adult Futsal has come to Peterborough thanks to the new City of Peterborough Futsal Centre.

Futsal is an indoor version of football. It is five-a-side but played on a basketball size court with a smaller but heavier ball. It relies on skill and speed. Its how Ronaldo and Messi started and people around the world love to play it especially in Brazil.

See the video at the bottom of the page and watch some great futsal goals.

Now its the turn of deaf people in Peterborough to play and hopefully start a team. Deaf coach Michael Bedford will be leading the training sessions with Qadeer Hussain.

Futsal has become popular recently with deaf teams springing up across the country. Fulham Deaf FC have their own futsal team doing well in the league so maybe the same will happen in Peterborough if you come along.

Check out our deaf friendly football sessions for kids too.

Watch: Footballer Derrick Coleman's NFL Duracell battery advert is an inspiration to deaf children around the world (with captions)

Watch this video from battery manufacturer Duracell featuring deaf NFL (American Football League) professional Derrick Coleman.

The story is that Derrick has been deaf since three and faced bullying, misunderstanding and was told to quit the sport on account of his deafness. But he took no notice and now plays the sport he loves in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans every week.

Having faith in deaf children's ability, no matter what level it is, and overcoming communication barriers is something we do here at PDDCS deaf friendly football coaching in association with The Posh. We want the deaf kids of Peterborough to, if they want, be like Derrick but without ever feeling like they don't belong on a sports field.

You can support us in that aim. See how you can support us.

Major Development: New Deaf Youth Football Team becomes part of Peterborough United

Peterborough United have confirmed this week that the new Deaf Youth Football team, only established two-months ago by PDDCS, Hampton FC and Jack Hunt School, will become part of the Championship club.

While all the original stakeholders of the project are all still as involved as they ever were - the team's name will change to Peterborough United Deaf Football Club and the kids will now wear the historic blue and white strip of the club on match-days. The Posh will also support the young city's young deaf footballers in the following ways:

  • Training at the Posh Academy if needed (coaching remains at Jack Hunt)
  • Use of coaching equipment
  • Discount for coach's clothing
  • Access to club transport for away matches
  • Use of the club name and kits for match days
  • Free tickets to Posh home matches for the players
  • Reports on the Posh.com website and in the match-day magazine
Rob Neil remains the head-coach of the deaf team alongside assistant coaches Qadeer Hussain, Katie Bocking and Tash Applegate. Funding will still need to be sought to pay for the development of deaf youth football in the city so the roles of the founding partners of the project remain as crucial as ever. There is still lots of work to be done.

This brilliant news reinforces the importance of providing accessible opportunities to play football for deaf children in the city. It means the players can wear the Posh shirt with the pride shown by some of the clubs greatest players and compete on an equal footing with other deaf teams from cities like Cardiff, Norwich City and Manchester United.
Deaf friendly coaching will continue on Monday nights at Jack Hunt School after the Easter holidays and is open to all boys and girls, of all abilities and of any age.

**Don't forget that Hampton FC are hosting a free deaf friendly football session with Claire Stancliffe at Hampton FC's facility on the 12th April.**

Football team return to Peterborough with much to celebrate

The first team ever to represent Peterborough's deaf children have returned home from their first competitive action with much to be happy about.

The under 12's team, which only began training five weeks ago as part of the city's first ever deaf friendly football coaching, played in the NDCS (National Deaf Children's Society) Football Tournament in Reading and finished a respectable 4th out of seven teams.

Peterborough beat teams coached by professional clubs such as Cardiff and Brentford and were unlucky not to have finished higher. The eventual winners from London, could only hold Peterborough to a draw. There was much to be pleased about and this tournament will give the players confidence as they continue to train and look forward to more friendly matches this year. Check out our pictures from the day on this video:

Thanks to Hampton Football Club for their support, Jack Hunt School for their generosity in providing the transport and training facilities and to BGL for the excellent kits they provided quickly so the boys looked the part. Thanks also go to Rob, Katy, Tash, Jade and Qadeer who make up our coaching team and to Teresa Quail for her major role in organising the event and deaf friendly football coaching in general. Finally, thanks to Jake the goalkeeper who helped us out and was outstanding.

If you're interested in coming along to our deaf friendly football coaching - you are welcome. Its for all ages, boys and girls and all abilities. Click here for more
