Weekend for Families with Pre-school Deaf Children - Norwich

Below are the details from the NDCS for an upcoming families weekend:

"This weekend is an opportunity for families from across the country to spend a relaxing and informative few days in the company of other families who all have at least one thing in common – they have a pre-school child with a hearing loss. The weekend, which will begin with families arriving on Friday evening, will be led by experienced NDCS staff and guest speakers will join us for specialist sessions.
The topics covered will include:

• Schools/Education
• Positive Parenting
• Real life experiences
• Communication
• Play

We even take all your little ones off your hands during the day. They will be cared for by a mobile crèche company and take part in a range of activities. Accommodation and meals are all included.
“We thoroughly enjoyed the NDCS family weekend. It will keep us thinking positive thoughts for our deaf children. It’s nice to hear other people’s stories so you don’t feel totally alone.”

PDDCS Family Sign Peterborough 2014

NDCS Family Sign Language (FSL) course started Thursday (14th November 2013) at the PDDCS Toddler Group. The toddler group runs fortnightly.

Family Sign will take place from 10am-11am but toddlers opens from 9.30-11.30 as normal.

Toddler Group is run by parent Amy Casselden. The group is aimed at pre-school children and held at the Jigsaw Centre in Orton Malborne, Peterborough.

It's a great opportunity to meet other parents who are raising young children with hearing impairments and also for the little ones to play together! Siblings are also welcome during the school holidays. There is a range of activities for the children and free refreshments for the folks, which usually means tea and biscuits.

Another bonus is that the group is regularly attended by staff from Peterborough City Hospital's Audiology team to answer questions, make sure hearing aids are working and take new ear mould impressions for those fast growing ears, saving families time in booking and attending appointments. Alongside the Audiology team, the Teacher of the Deaf and the Teaching Assistant for Early Years from Peterborough Sensory Support Services will also present to suppport any queries. School age children are also welcome to come and get new ear moulds too.

Peterborough Family Sign Course

NDCS weekends for families with deaf children and young people

Last week we posted about Barry Pullen, who won a Diamond Champion Award for his volunteer work with the NDCS. Barry is very involved with the Newly Identified Families Weekends all over the country. The NDCS run a range of free weekends for families with deaf children and young people:

• Newly identified  -  Families with children who have been identified in the last 18 months with a hearing loss. 
• Pre-school - Families with deaf children aged 2 ½ - 4 years old
• Pre-secondary - Families with deaf children aged 8-10 years old
• Teenage - Families with deaf teenagers aged 13-15 years old

On Saturday 11^th May City College Peterborough are running a free Family Film Fun event. On Wednesday 22^nd May they are holding their 3^rd Community Event which includes a Parents Meet Up and Come Along and Meet Each Other (CAMEO) Friendship Club.

NDCS Weekend for Families with Newly Identified Deaf Children, Wyboston Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th March 

  

This weekend is an opportunity for families from across the region to spend a relaxing and informative few days in the company of other families who all have at least one thing in common – they have a child who has recently been diagnosed with a hearing loss. The weekend will be led by experienced NDCS staff and guest speakers will join us for specialist sessions. Accommodation and meals are included.

• Sharing experiences
• Understanding audiology
• Communication can be fun
• Information on local support
• A deaf child in the family - real life experiences

We even take all your little ones off your hands during the day. They will be cared for by a mobile creche company and will take part in a range of activities.

“I felt really nervous about coming to the weekend but once I got there it was just great to be with other families who knew what I was talking about! It's such a relief to chat to someone experiencing the same things.”

The Ear Foundation Family Programme 2012

The Ear Foundation are known among many families and professionals for the good work they do for children with hearing losses, especially those who have cochlear implants. This week they released their family programme for 2012.

3D Derby Deaf Drama: A Christmas Carol

Following last year’s successful production of Snow White, 3D Derby Deaf Drama returns with another magical Christmas show for families. This year journey through the life of cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge who has no time for Christmas merriment and cheer. As the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve, his world is turned upsidedown as he visits Christmases past, present and future. A Christmas Carol is ideal for family outing presented in British Sign Language with voiceover.
