Deaf Futsal (indoor football) Now in Peterborough ... come along on Wednesdays

Deaf Adult Futsal has come to Peterborough thanks to the new City of Peterborough Futsal Centre.

Futsal is an indoor version of football. It is five-a-side but played on a basketball size court with a smaller but heavier ball. It relies on skill and speed. Its how Ronaldo and Messi started and people around the world love to play it especially in Brazil.

Now its the turn of deaf people in Peterborough to play and hopefully start a team. Deaf coach Michael Bedford will be leading the training sessions with Qadeer Hussain.

Futsal has become popular recently with deaf teams springing up across the country. Fulham Deaf FC have their own futsal team doing well in the league so maybe the same will happen in Peterborough if you come along.

PDDCS member is awarded Parents Player of the Year for Hampton

Last week William won Parents Player of the year for Hampton. William has a clear passion for football. He is a committed player, training weekly with Hampton. This season he has scored 13 goals and was the top scorer for the last two seasons.

Hampton recognised him to be the most improved player last year. He was also selected for East Midlands deaf centre of excellence.

In addition to these sessions William trains at the deaf friendly football sessions that take place each Monday night. As a PDDCS member, William has played at the National Deaf Youth Football Tournament in Reading.

Congratulations William.

England Deaf Futsal Squad trials

Update from Me2 Sports team:

The FA will be hosting England Deaf Futsal Squad trials on 27th & 28th April 2013 at the Lilleshall National Sport Centre.

The new England Deaf Futsal Team will be participating in the Qualification Round for the 2014 European Futsal Championship, with a view to qualifying for the 2014 European Deaf Futsal Championships, these Championships will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria in November 2014.

All players, aged 16 and over, who meet the eligibility criteria*, and who play football or futsal are encouraged to apply.

* Eligibility criteria - International Committee of Sport for the Deaf (ICSD) rules state a deaf person must have a hearing loss of 55db or greater in the better ear to compete in deaf sport.

Claire Stancliffe to support a Hampton deaf friendly football session

The PDDCS are delighted to share the news that Claire Stancliffe will be supporting a deaf friendly football session with Hampton Football Club on 12th April. Claire plays deaf football for both England and Great Britain. She is a World Cup bronze medallist from 2008 and a Deaflympian.

At the upcoming 2013 Deaflympics, Claire will represent Great Britain hockey.

PDDCS are pleased to offer free deaf friendly football coaching in Peterborough in association with Jack Hunt School and Hampton Football Club.

Open to all ages from primary age to youth, deaf football coaching is for both boys and girls with all levels of hearing loss, any language preference or football ability.

We are lucky to have obtained the services of a qualified FA level two coach called Robert Neal who will be assisted by communication supporters and a coaching assistant. Robert is currently a coach for Hampton Football Club and Posh Leaders.

Update - New PDDCS Kit!

Posh Chairman Darragh makes Husnayn's day

Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough United's Chairman, visited Jack Hunt School last week to address some year 11 students. Although a selected group of exam students were invited to the motivational speech, Darragh devoted some time to meet and greet younger students throughout the break-time period.

Husnayn, a PDDCS member and one of POSH's biggest fans was elated when Darragh spoke with him about the recent FA Cup match against Norwich and the clubs chances for the rest of the season. The boy was made-up and couldn't stop talking about it - thanks Darragh!!

Since Mr McAnthony took over Peterborough
United and saved it from almost certain ruin, it has experienced promotion three times; won a trophy at Wembley and the team currently plays in the second tier of the English League, called the Championship. The Championship is the fourth most watched league in Europe after The Premier League, Spain and German leagues. Mr McAnthony is also a successful businessman and has recently started a publishing company.

On top of all that, Darragh also launched the Helping Hands Group in 2011 which provides education, therapy sessions and vocation for people with physical or learning disabilities. You can follow Darragh McAnthony on twitter here:

In other football related news, PDDCS are close to finalising a deal with a qualified coach to establish deaf football coaching in the city, with a view to entering a side into National Deaf Children's Football Championship in Reading in March. We'll be fundraising for that kit and equipment soon!

One of our members, William Palmer, (who is also a big Posh fan) was Posh mascot when West Ham visited last year. His great-grandfather used to help run the club in the 70's and 80's and is pictured here in this old team photo!

Manchester City offer BSL Stadium Tours

We all know that Peterborough United are the best team in the land but some other clubs in the UK also have their strong points. Take for example Manchester City who offer BSL signed tours of their fabulous Etihad Stadium.

The stadium was originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and converted into a football stadium ready for City to move in the following year. Look, I don't want to ruin it for you so I'll stop there but it's an amazing place. To book your place on the tour click here..

Guess who we bumped into at the football?

Regular readers (and over 1 million other people across the world) may recognise this little girl with her mummy and daddy. This is a Ava with her dad Nick and mum Lilli who we featured on PDDCS News back in January when a video of Ava signing at the dinner table went viral on the internet.

I (Andy) bumped into them at GB Deaf Football's match today verus Greece. Greece won 2-0 and ended GB's hopes of playing at next years Deaflympics. Shame - as GB had the majority of the ball and chances. There was a lot of unhappy and disappointed GB footballers around afterwards as the Greeks went wild.

During the match, Dad Nick, who is also a retired GB Deaf football international and is heavily involved in Fulham Deaf Football Club told me that he posted the video on his Facebook page and people just kept sharing it - until eventually it was shared over 4,000 times and the hits just kept racking up!

You'll be pleased to know that Ava is well and her sign language is even more impressive than it was in January. See the video that went round the world below..

Deaf footballer starts career in USA

Norwich Evening News has the story that a deaf footballer called Gemma Newson, from Caister in Norfolk, is off to Texas to play football (or soccer if you prefer) for a college team.

Gemma plays for both England and Great Britain teams in goal said she can't wait to start her career in America.

She said: “It’s been my dream to play in America, it hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” she added. “The whole team’s aim is to win the nationals but my personal aim is to get the most experience that I can, and then bring it back here and give that back to the Great Britain and England deaf football team.”

Deaf Footballer Sent Off For Wearing Hearing Aids

Normally footballers are sent to the stands because an overpaid fellow professional is rolling around the floor looking like they've been attacked by a dangerous dog following a contact so slight it could almost be described as romantic.

But its a different story if you play for pub team in Rotherham and get a referee seemingly hell-bent on taking health and safety madness to new levels: 'Never mind the studs in your boots, Son ... I'm worried about your killer hearing aids'.

The Mirror has the full story here about how hearing aid wearer Craig Beech was told to get off the pitch by the referee for wearing hearing aids during a match. Refusing to bend to appeals from Craig's team mates and the opposition, the match was bought to a premature end by the daft ref when Craig's team, The Mason Arms, walked off in protest.

It's a wonder that the referee hasn't sent a player off yet for having teeth. See the FA rules about hearing aids and cochlear implants here. Basically, its fine to wear them and all this need not have happened..

Top football club MK Dons, in association with NDCS, are hosting a football festival on 15th October 2011.

Following the football festival at Tattenhoe Pavillion in MK, all the kids get free tickets to see the big batch between MK Dons and Bournemouth at the impressive Stadium MK.
