A play which is accessible for sign language users as well as those who can hear is on its way to Peterborough.
Frozen, by Byrony Lavery, has been described as a '
masterpeice' by reviewers and will be performed at Peterborough's Key Theatre on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th March.
Starring award-winning deaf talent including Jean St Clair and Sophie Stone, Frozen tells the story of three people affected by the disappearance of 10-year-old Rhona; Nancy, her mother, Ralph who abducted her and Agentha, a psychiatrist who is studying what causes men to commit such crimes.
The three people’s stories intertwine over a period of 25 years as the play explores grief, emotional paralysis and forgiveness. It will be performed in BSL and spoken English which will be probably be a unique experience for the Peterborough audience.
Frozen is on a UK tour after a hugely successful run at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Peterborough is the final date in the calendar and should be a fantastic finale for the production. A real treat for both deaf and hearing people in the city
Royal Academy trained actress Sophie Stone, who worked with a group of extras from Peterborough during the filming of the short film Retreat, is looking forward to coming and establishing lasting bonds.
She said: "We're very excited to be working with Peterborough and the Key Theatre."
"We are trying to forge relationships between local theatres and the surrounding deaf community which would otherwise probably not have many opportunities to see such integrated and accessible theatre."
Following the performance on Monday 10th, there will be a
post-show discussion exploring the making of Frozen and some of the issues that the play raises.
Sophie said: "We're also hoping to work with local schools to create awareness and protection tools via a workshop; and with the NSPCC's involvement be able to leave contact details for those in need. After the show, what we'll leave behind is support, relationships and a follow-up further down the line."
The play is by Fingersmiths, a new and inclusive theatre company. Director Jeni Draper said: "It is a powerful drama with some raw emotions in it but there is humour and lightness too. It is tender and touching and will leave you with many things to talk about!"
"Ultimately it is a play about hope and how we as humans can endure the worst things that life can throw at us and to varying degrees move on with our lives."
