Inspire Peterborough introduces Sporting Sunday!

Following on from the success of Sporting Saturday over the last few years, Inspire Peterborough are launching a new accessible sport event, Sporting Sunday!

The First Sporting Sunday will take place on 5th July from 1.30pm at Jack Hunt School Sports Centre in Netherton and will showcase inclusive sports that have not yet featured at Sporting Saturday events.

Some of the most exciting of these are Swimming, Goalball, Wheelchair Dance and Seated Volleyball, which will all take place on site.

Deaf friendly British Cycling affiliated Go-ride cycling club

Thorpe Ventures Cycling Club has worked closely with the PDDCS over the last year.  They have just become a British Cycling affiliated Go-ride cycling club. Their sessions are deaf friendly.

PDDCS deaf friendly swimming Round 4

PDDCS babies, children and young people have been enjoying the deaf-friendly swimming sessions delivered by Lisa, swimming instructor, and Vivacity.












The next ten week block starts on 8th Jan at the regional pool in Peterborough each Thursday:
age 0-3: 4.30-5pm
age 3-5 5-5.30pm
age 5-19 5.30-6pm

Thanks to funding support from Vivacity, the ten week course is only £30.

Weekend and Half Term Cycling Lessons - Peterborough

Thorpe Ventures deliver a range of cycling sessions for children and young people.  They are running two cycling sessions at half term as well as their regular Saturday morning sessions.

Tuesday 27^th May, 1-3pm and Thursday 29^th May 10-12 noon.

Both sessions are at Jack Hunt School as normal and they will be concentrating on riding on hills and cyclo-cross racing. These sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities. All equipment is provided but riders can use their own bikes if they like.

In addition to these mainstream sessions, there is specific 6 week block for individuals with any level of hearing loss starting 8th May - Thursday - 4-5pm.:

The story is that Derrick has been deaf since three and faced bullying, misunderstanding and was told to quit the sport on account of his deafness. But he took no notice and now plays the sport he loves in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans every week.



Having faith in deaf children's ability, no matter what level it is, and overcoming communication barriers is something we do here at PDDCS deaf friendly football coaching in association with The Posh. We want the deaf kids of Peterborough to, if they want, be like Derrick but without ever feeling like they don't belong on a sports field.

Supporting Deaf People to Play Squash

Last week Squashsite365 posted the following news:

"Deaf people will soon have more opportunities to play squash, as a new resource is launched to pave the way to make the game more accessible. 

The guide, Deaf-Friendly Squash, is the first of its kind and has been produced by England Squash &Racketball (ESR) in partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and UK Deaf Sport (UKDS). The resource aims to show coaches how, through following simple steps, deaf people can be taught to play and enjoy squash. 

The guide is accompanied by a video which features a range of signs to help coaches support deaf people who use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate. For the full article click here"

Locally in Peterborough Racxsports have delivered a series of free deaf-friendly training sessions to PDDCS members. Dan, the coach, is making great efforts to improve the deaf awareness with the organisation.

Deaf young people are welcome to join their following mainstream sessions:

Primary school aged/maybe year 7 - Saturdays from 10:30 am

Secondary school aged and above, inc. adults - 11:45 - 12:45

Taekwondo, "Suits You"

After the deaf only taster sessions Chloe, Katie and Chyanne had another free session with one of the main class's and decided to join Evolution Taekwondo.
Looking good in their new suits and ready for action, the girls start their first steps on their journey to become black belts. Good luck girls.

Although our taster sessions were for ages 10+, Evolution Taekwondo hold classes from 3 years to adult. And are great for anyone. They are happy to work with deaf children and to accommodate where they can. So if you are interested or have any concerns please contact them or ourselves.

Deaf - friendly squash free taster sessions

With Deaflympics 2013 fast approaching, the PDDCS has been working with local sports organisations to support them co-ordinating deaf friendly FREE taster sessions. The football and TaeKwondo proved successful with free football sessions continuing to run each Monday night during the school term. Racxsports is the lastest local sports organisation to offer free taster sessions to deaf young people. Dan has been very proactive, making contact with UK Deaf Sports for guidance. Dan has won England Squash & Racketball Young Coach of the Year award for 2012

The sessions will take place from 4.30-5.40 at the Peterborough Town Sport Centre. A minibus will be leaving Jack Hunt School at 4.10 and returning 5.45. See details below.
