Werrington school's charity donation to the PDDCS

This morning Jack and I went to see year 6 at Werrington School in Peterborough.

The amazing children there had had a cake and badge sale to raise money for the PDDCS Toddler Group.

They managed to raise £100 which is going to go towards our Deaf Aware swimming lessons which will start in the new year.

The children were very interested to learn all about our Toddler group and how important it is for both children and adults.

Jack and I were then blown away by their signed version of Away in a Manger.

These children have worked so hard to help us with our next target.

Thank you so much from all our Toddlers and their Mums and Dads x

PDDCS Toddler Winter Event

It was an amazing magical morning with the Deaf Toddlers in the Winter Wonderland at Baytree Garden Centre.  We rode on a magical train pulled by Reindeer to Santa's magical house that was run by his jolly elves. Every member got a special present and a baby Christmas tree to plant in their garden.

We topped the morning off by making sure Santa's Reindeers had enough carrots to take him back to the North Pole to carry on making Christmas presents for Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas everyone

See you back at Toddlers on the 9th of Jan

Love Amy and Jack xxxx

Toddler update!

From Amy Casselden

A small gathering at the PDDCS Toddler group last week because of the weather but we didn't mind as it was Drakes 2nd Birthday and it meant more cake for us. Yum!

Don't forget to pass the message on to anyone you know with a deaf pre-school child that we have the toddler group every two weeks on a Thursday. We are very lucky to have our Audiologist there to do any new ear moulds that are needed as those little ears grow so quickly. We also have our teachers of the deaf at hand to answer any questions you may have. It's like a one-stop shop with tea and biscuits!

We always have a great morning and there are lots of toys for the children to play with which leaves the adults to drink tea and chat! It is a great chance to have a good chat with people on a similar path which is a great help!

Any questions please call or text me on 07816911744 and check out our Toddler page

The Ruby Range - dolls with hearing aids!

Check out these cute little dolls with diddly little hearing aids! Why not make hearing aids fun if your child wears them?

You can see more and buy them here. They hearing aids are made and designed by Charles Baxter of Mary Hare School and added to these dolls.

NOTE: These toys are meant for children old enough to know not to put small objects in their mouths. The hearing aid can be pulled apart, just like a normal hearing aid. They haven't been tested to any safety standard.

The moment a baby hears for the first time

This video has been a big hit on YouTube this week and across Facebook. It shows the moment that an eight month-old baby has his cochlear implant switched on for the first time.

Most children who have a cochlear implant fitted experience good results. The 'switch-on' is often a big moment in the family's journey when children can show a reaction to sound, sometimes for the first time ever.

In this clip, the baby seems to show that he knows that he is listening to his mother's voice. Progress with cochlear implants varies from child to child and a programme of rehabilitation is put in place for children to help them understand what noise and speech are, this is a skill that develops over time.

The family in this clip will likely have to attend many tune-in sessions over the coming months and his carers will have plenty to do in terms of rehabilitation activities to make the most of the cochlear implant - although it does look like they have made a brilliant start!

Fascinating insight into life for deaf children in 1954

Last week my father bought to my attention two videos that had been uploaded to YouTube of a documentary into life at the Royal School for Deaf Children in Margate from 1954. Unfortunately, the videos were not subtitled so Teresa Quail and myself set about the task of transcribing the videos and re-uploading them for all to enjoy.

The video is particularly close to my heart because in part two it features my mother, Catherine, as an eight-year-old girl enjoying class with her friend Linda Fincham who has remained a friend of our family for years.

It's provides a fascinating insight into school life and the approaches to educating deaf children sixty years ago. In the second part of the film, the children are discussing a book called 'Little Black Sambo' which was popular in the first part of the 20th century. Since then the book has fallen out of favour in schools because the language and illustrations are not appropriate today. For more information on this book, please see it's Wikipedia entry.

Please click the 'CC' button at the bottom right of the screen to access the subtitles.
