Swimming instructors get sign language training thanks to swimmers efforts

Swimming and sports instructors from across Peterborough took part in the first BSL (British Sign Language) classes paid for by the efforts of two-heroic swimmers that swam 22-miles down the River Nene last week.

The sign language courses, which will get the instructors to the BSL Level 1 qualification, also include a sports module and deaf awareness training that will allow both deaf children and adults to access inclusive sports coaching and tuition in Peterborough.

The classes are funded by the sponsorship money raised by Julie Longland and Lisa Ryan who completed a 22-mile swim, known as the Nene Channel Challenge, last week and have so far raised £1,700. They are still collecting donations.

The courses are being delivered by tutor Nicki Sanders as part of an intensive course. Peterborough City Council's Leisure division, known as Vivacity, have allowed staff from leisure centres across the city the time off to attend the course with Hampton Leisure Centre being the only exception.

Andy Palmer, Chairman of the Peterborough and District Deaf Association said: "Anyone who donated to the amazing swim in the last few weeks can now see their money being put to good use in training sports and swimming instructors to be deaf aware and learn sign language."

"This doesn't just benefit the members of PDDCS, but all deaf children and adults who use leisure facilities in Peterborough and is a continuation of the strong focus PDDCS has given deaf sports over the years.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen. Much work from Amy Casselden and Teresa Quail on our committee is devoted to deaf-friendly swimming and of course to Lisa and Julie who completed that quite incredible swim last week. Massive thanks also to Carl of Bannatyne's Gym in Werrington for giving us free use of the room."

You can still donate to the Nene Channel Challenge here

RAF Wittering choose PDDCS as one their two charities of the year

Jack at an special PDDCS
open day at RAF Wittering
We're delight to announce that RAF Wittering have selected PDDCS as one of their two charities of the year. This is great news as it will help pay for our many activities throughout the year (of which there are many for deaf children and their families)

Here is the press release from RAF Wittering

CHARITIES for children with serious and long term conditions were chosen by RAF Wittering’s Charities Committee as the Station’s local good causes for 2014/2015.
Anna’s Hope, a Lincolnshire based charity, supports children and young adults with brain tumours. The charity was founded by Robert and Claire Hughes, who lost their daughter Anna to a brain tumour at only three years old.

Since October 2006 Anna’s Hope has made a difference to the lives of children and young people with brain tumours by providing support and rehabilitation, during and after treatment, to help them reach their full potential.

Anna’s Hope founder Carole Hughes said; “Anna's Hope is absolutely delighted to be chosen by RAF Wittering to be a chosen charity for 2014/2015 along with Peterborough Deaf Children’s Society, thank you. Every penny raised for Anna's Hope will go to making a difference to children and young people in this region diagnosed with a brain tumour.”

The Peterborough & District Deaf Children’s Society (PDDCS) has provided lots of activities for children who are deaf or suffer from hearing loss. Ages range from babies to young adults and the society has around 120 member families.

Founded in 1971, the PDDCS has been supporting deaf and hearing-impaired children and their families by arranging sports, active pursuits and enjoyable days out, and provides a valuable social outlet for parents.

Andy Palmer, PDDCS Chairman said; “We're delighted to be chosen with Anna’s Hope and very much looking forward to working with RAF Wittering this year. The PDDCS needs support to do what it does, and this is really going to help us make a big difference to children with deafness and hearing loss. Thank you RAF Wittering.”

Although RAF Wittering’s personnel are free to make their own arrangements for charitable giving, any monies which are raised through Station-wide events for local charities will be divided on an equal basis between Anna’s Hope and PDDCS.

RAF Wittering Station Commander, Group Captain Damian Alexander said; “I am very pleased that the Station Charities Committee has chosen two good causes which are local to RAF Wittering, as this supplements the wider charitable support that we provide to the Service’s own charities. Anna’s Hope and the Peterborough Deaf Children’s Society work towards different goals but, importantly, have a key connection, that of the welfare of children and young adults at their core.”

He continued; “These organisations are run by hardworking and selfless volunteers, who give freely of their own time and resources. This kind of commitment resonates very clearly with RAF Wittering personnel, who have a long record of generous charitable giving and service before self.”

PDDCS once again extends its thanks to RAF Wittering for this news and for all they (and Rachel Mawdsley) have done for us in the past

Instructor to swim equivalent of English Channel down the Nene to raise money for deaf swimming coaching

Two swimming instructors are preparing to swim 22.3 miles down the River Nene to raise money for PDDCS. That's the equivalent of swimming the English Channel to France!

Lisa Ryan and friend Julie will be swimming from Barnwell, near Oundle, in Northamptonshire to Milton Ferry Bridge at the popular Ferry Meadow's Country Park in Peterborough with the aim of raising enough money to pay for sign language lessons for swimming instructors so that local deaf people have access to swimming classes.

The 'Nene Channel Challenge' will take place on August 2nd and take in the twisting course of the Nene. Lisa already provides swimming classes for deaf children through the PDDCS with the help of interpreters.

"The Nene Channel Challenge was born after we decided to do the channel equivalent." Lisa said.
"We have a safety canoeist who has volunteered to watch the two of us swimming! We are hoping to do it wet suit free too and it's getting scarily close now! We need to raise a minimum of £1600 to do what we want to do!"
Upper Barnwell
Lisa and Julie hope to raise enough money to pay for sign language courses so that they can offer swimming lessons to the entire deaf community themselves. Across the UK, there is a severe lack of swimming lessons that are accessible to deaf children and adults. This limits opportunities for leading healthy lifestyles and means that deaf children are less confident and safe in and around water.

Lisa was inspired by meeting Amy Casselden, a PDDCS committee member and parent, and her son Jack.

"Due to meeting Amy and her wonderful son Jack and beginning to teach him, I quickly found out about the gap in deaf children participating in swimming and decided to do what I could to start address it!" She said.
Milton Ferry Bridge 22 miles downstream
"It costs a lot of money to do the channel and we wanted money raised to be used by the charity for something specific so decided to do the channel distance equivalent but somewhere where it's free of charge!

"I have taught swimming for over 25 years now and am very passionate about children learning this valuable life skill and I also have started this in Swaziland Africa.

"All children deserve the chance to swim!"

Lisa and Julie are aiming to raise £2000 but need more sponsors. They are appealing for people to share the details of their online sponsorship page and donate. You can visit the page here or visit the Nene Channel Challenge Page

A huge thank you to RAF Wittering and Rachel Mawdsley

Rachel (centre) and Maris (right)  with husband Gareth and daughter Izzy
Rachel Mawdsley from RAF Wittering raised an amazing £362 for PDDCS by running the Grantham half-marathon. Her daughter Izzy and husband Gareth also ran the 3km run.

A big thanks to them for their amazing efforts. Rachel was also at RAF Wittering when they generously hosted PDDCS for an amazing day of fun around the huge airbase last month.

The children and families had a go on the fire engines, the firing range and could climb aboard the impressive collection of vehicles stationed at the base. The families also had a guided tour of the Harrier museum and a hearty lunch! Take a look at the pictures below!

Rachel said: "It was a lovely day running the marathon, really sunny and 500 people completed the Grantham Half Marathon. Maris and I ran in 1 hr 57 minutes which we were really pleased with and faster than we thought – training obviously paid off!

"The route was a mixture of flat by the tow path and 2 big hills that were quite a challenge! The event started and finished at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium in Grantham and the finish on the running track was a nice touch."

Andy Palmer, committee member of PDDCS said:

"We just want to say a huge thanks to Rachel and her family. It was lovely to meet them on our day at the very impressive Wittering base. The money she raised will go directly on the events we run for deaf children and their families all year round. If it were not for people like Rachel, we wouldn't be here for the over 100 deaf children in the city.

"I also want to thank Station Commander Group Captain Damian Alexander for his generosity, warmth and hospitality to PDDCS and to Ed Palmer and all the staff from Wittering for putting on such an amazing day for our families. It was one of the best events we've done."

You can find out more about RAF Wittering on their Facebook page and see what PDDCS have going on this year on our events page. If you would like to fund raise for us, please get in touch.

Werrington school's charity donation to the PDDCS

This morning Jack and I went to see year 6 at Werrington School in Peterborough.

The amazing children there had had a cake and badge sale to raise money for the PDDCS Toddler Group.

They managed to raise £100 which is going to go towards our Deaf Aware swimming lessons which will start in the new year.

The children were very interested to learn all about our Toddler group and how important it is for both children and adults.

Jack and I were then blown away by their signed version of Away in a Manger.

These children have worked so hard to help us with our next target.

Thank you so much from all our Toddlers and their Mums and Dads x

Like father like daughter - jumping out of planes for PDDCS

25 years ago, Alf Lutton did a Skydive for PDDCS to raise funds for the charity that did so much for his daughter, Ally Lutton. All these years later, just like her dad, Ally will be jumping out of a plane at Sibson tomorrow to support our awesome little charity.

Ally and her pet pooch
The reason they do it is because they know how important it is for deaf kids and their families that we're here. We don't need a lot compared with other charities. Our budget is only about £10k every year but we spend it wisely on things that benefit the kids and their families. Christmas parties, discos, deaf friendly football, outings, parent club, toddler groups, summer play schemes, youth group, drama, role model events and more. We make a little go a very, very long way.

Ally is going to jump out of a plane tomorrow because like her father 25 years ago, she believes in what we do. So please support her and give a little donation via her giving page. It won't take a minute and will help pay for something that will make a difference.

Here's what Ally says: "The reason I am doing a skydive as I want to raise money toward to my favourite charity PDDCS whom I have known for many years, since I was child as I have so many happy memories of this charity.

They have made fantastic activities, events, done volunteering work and so much more to keep deaf children able to continue to enjoy their lives and keep their memories going and also importantly to built their confidence despite of their deafness so won't lose self-esteem, and that's why we need PDDCS to encourage deaf children to build their confidence at an early age before they grow older. Without PDDCS, every deaf child would have no confidence and made them feel isolated in the hearing world. I hope PDDCS can continue in many years to come."

Please donate a little here

Casterton Business and Enterprise College supports PDDCS in 2012-13

One of the four houses at Casterton Business and Enterprise College has chosen to support PDDCS as their charity of the year in 2012-13.

The Green House as they are known, will be raising money for PDDCS through a range of events taking place over the academic year with students raising or donating all of the money. The Green House raised over £800 for their nominated charity last year which if they repeat the feat this time, will be a huge boost.

Committee member Andy Palmer is due at the school to talk about the charity and deafness and teach the students a little sign language. He said: "This is brilliant news and hopefully the money raised by the kids from the Green Team at Casterton will help pay for some of our events in the coming year - can't thank the Green House enough for nominating us."

He continued: "And in recognition I promise the Casterton College Green kids a free sign language lesson once the total raised reaches £500."

Keep it here for more information on the fundraising events through the year..

TLM's £3,000 Sky Dive Pictures are here!

Ever so slightly excited .. The Three Little Midgets (TLM) all smiles after suiting-up.

There's the plane that the TLM will jump from - someone check the oil, would ya?
Doesn't matter how much you flap - the parachute is the only way down if you like breathing ...

TLM (Katie Bocking, Chyanne Golding and Tara Forkin) inside the cafe with helmets, goggles and parachutes on. Time for a last minute burger?
Is she saying 'GOAL' or 'NOOO!'? My lipreading isn't all that good. Anyway - who scored?

Oil..check .. Petrol ... Check .. Propeller .. Check .. TLM .. Check .. Parachutes .. Check ..
Three Grand? .. Cheque! Get up the there girls!
No turning back now .. so  I guess it's time to push some scenery past the windows .. and then the girls out of the door.

On the way down now .. Impossible to tell which one this is but its one of them, I promise.  Even if I did know which one it was, if I told you, I'd have to kill you.
Back in the war days, there was a saying .. Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes .. camera's these days have wonderful zoom lenses and stuff though - although you wouldn't know it from the last two pictures.

Ah that's better .. here comes .. er, one of them! It's my age. Eyesight ain't what it used to be. If you can make it out - leave    your suggestion in the comments and I'll update it after my nap.

A midget has landed and bought £3,000 with her.

Back on terra-firma (that means solid earth in Latin) and the TLM with their experts face the cameras and the adoring friends and family who, to be frank, think these three girls are awesome. Their bravery is gonna put plenty of smiles on deaf children's faces this year.

The 3 Little Midgets did it!!!

The weather cleared long enough today to allow the '3 Little Midgets' to sky dive. An inspirational event. Vital funds raised for the charity. Good on you ladies!!! Video footage to follow soon.
