" UCL are hosting a fantastic opportunity for deaf hand hard of hearing students in year 11 and year 12. The summer school is a 3 day residential programme that gives you the chance to find out more about UCL through staying in the university halls and taking part in fun and academic sessions at UCL. University of Wolverhampton : Deaf Learner Open Day

The University of Wolverhampton will be hosting its Deaf Learner Open Day on the 2^nd May 2014.  It is a free event, open to Deaf and hard of hearing young people accompanied by their teachers/support staff or parents. 

"The event is aimed at those who are at school or college, year 10 onwards, however, if there are  pupils in year 9 who you feel would benefit from this visit, they are welcome to attend. Deaf parents of hearing children who would like to know what university has to offer their children, may also attend.

We will be providing information about university life and study, the types of support available and funding.  Visitors will also be able to ask questions of our specialist staff, have a tour of the university and meet our deaf and hard of hearing students. The programme is available on the University website.

NDCS: My Future event March 2014

The NDCS are running an event for deaf young people aged 16-18 on the 1^st March in Birmingham. This is a one day event for deaf young people who are thinking about what they would like to do when they leave school. They will have workshops on applying for University and work, support and information available, technology, CV writing and interview skills. They will also have young deaf role models there who will be sharing their experiences and answering questions.

UCAS 'How-to guides' in BSL

This month, as students enjoy the introductary weeks to University and colleges, UCAS (the UK's shared admissions service for higher education)  have announced the launch of videos to help deaf students apply to university or college.







Each video covers an individual part of the UCAS process including information for students with disabilities, how to apply, choosing a course, open days, personal statements, requesting a reference and a guide for parents.

All seven videos can be viewed as a playlist in the 'Individual needs' section of the site and also on the UCAStv website

Peterborough Deaf teenagers teach at Cambridge University

Over the last few years at Jack Hunt School the deaf students  have been delivering the deaf awareness sessions to the trainee teachers from Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia. Their delivery has often been described as the 'best workshop ever' experienced by the trainee teachers and lead lecturers of education.

The impact of their 'student voice' has been so powerful that the students were invited to Cambridge University to deliver deaf awareness workshops at the 'Adolescence' theme day. Yet again the students excelled in the role. 

As we departed the grounds after the long day of workshops, it brought a smile to the young people's faces to see the University students were still buzzing with their newly acquire sign knowledge and deaf awareness, sharing it with their peers who had attended other workshops.

Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship - D.E.A.F.

The team from the Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship (D.E.A.F) are keen to help more D/deaf people achieve their education and employment goals.

Deaf Open day - Aston Univerisity, Birmingham

Last month PDDCS members and parents attended DEAF's first 'Accessing University as a Deaf learner' event hosted by the University of West London.

DEAF - Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship - are running the event again with a Deaf Open Day at Aston Univerisity, Birmingham on Tuesday 18th September. There will be 2 sessions to choose from:11:00am – 12:30pm or 1:30pm – 3:00pm.

One can learn all about life at University and about the support that is on offer to you. The day really is full of useful information such as financial advice, student services, finding the right course and the day will include a look around the university.

If you are thinking about University and missed their first event it is worth attending any of their upcoming open day events.

Deaf Children interested in University? Read on..

How accessible is University? A FREE event for D/deaf pupils who are curious about if University is for them. (Parents, carers and professionals welcome.) It is organised by the Disability Services of various colleges of the University of London. This event is suitable for any pupil over 11 years but is likely to be of particular interest to those in Years 9-11 and at FE College.

It's on Saturday 24th September between 11.30am and 4.15pm at SOAS (the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London) London, WC1H 0XG.
