Signature Community Spirit Award Winners

Congratulations to Shelia and John Cheetham. John, retired PDDCS President for many years and his wife, Shelia won the Community Spirit 2014 Signature Annual Awards this month.

Below is from the Signature website http://signatureannualawards.org.uk/the-ceremony

Five minutes with Shelia and John Cheetham  - 2014 Signature Annual Awards Community Spirit winners

How did you feel when you were announced the 2014 Community Spirit Award winners?

Absolutely shocked, and very Honoured. The more so when we saw the standing ovation from the congregation!!

Did you enjoy the evening at Durham Cathedral?

Yes we did very much. Durham Cathedral was a beautiful place to have the ceremony. The people who were in attendance were all appreciative of the problems associated with Hearing Impairment, and in the drinks and canapés interval it was interesting to see everybody communicating with neighbours.

Could you give us a quote summing up the Signature Annual Awards for you?

It meant a lot to both of us. The nomination came as a complete surprise, in fact initially I thought it was a scam! When I made contact with Signature, I was both shocked, and excited at the prospect of a National Award for the time we had spent trying to raise the awareness of the hidden disability of Hearing Loss. Thank you for making the evening one to remember for the rest of our lives.

Where will you be putting your award?

It is in pride of place in our day room. The light through the stained glass award is lovely. It picks out the different colours, showing them off to all occupants.

Out of all the work you have done in the community what are you most proud of?

It is difficult to pick out one. There are three that I have found give us a lot of satisfaction.
  1. Music and the deaf - seeing profoundly deaf children playing violins etc is very moving.
  2. Getting a 'Hearing Dog' for a deaf child - the difference this makes to the child's life, giving them confidence, and getting the family to become one again.
  3. Starting a Deaf Awareness Trust - which is teaching communication to the general public, so that Hearing Impaired people need not be afraid of conversing with non deafened people.

Siblings are also welcome during the school holidays. There is a range of activities for the children and free refreshments for the folks, which usually means tea and biscuits. Toddler group is such an important of our deaf children's charity.

Another bonus is that the group is regularly attended by staff from Peterborough City Hospital's Audiology team to answer questions, make sure hearing aids are working and take new ear mould impressions for those fast growing ears, saving families time in booking and attending appointments. School age children are also welcome to come and get new ear moulds too.

Peterborough Deaf Friendly Boxfit May update

Earlier this year, ABC Peterborough Boxfit group offered to deliver discounted blocks of deaf-friendly sessions to PDDCS members as they were aware of the lack of adequate sporting services in the local area. The first 6 week block started alongside National Deaf Awareness week. From the deaf children and adults perspective the mainstream sessions are proving to be a great success.

"amazing seeing a group of kids having fun and exercising together. Even more amazing being a mix of deaf and hearing fully integrated, no access or communication problems thanks to the fantastic support of all at the club." Deaf adult.

The sessions, which run Fridays 6-7pm at Jack Hunt School,  consist of cross training, boxing moves and much fun.

For further details contact  Sam Stockwell - Instructor: Email: stockwell328@btinternet.com

PDDCS Annual General Meeting 2014

PDDCS Annual General Meeting 2014

Monday 19 May
7.00 pm (refreshments from 6.30 pm)
Jack Hunt School

What is an AGM?
At an Annual General Meeting (AGM) clubs and societies take stock of what has happened over the past year, elect committee members and officers and discuss their plans for the forthcoming year with their members. It is an open meeting to which anyone with an interest in the society can come along and take part. As our Society is concerned with Deaf Children we welcome all parents and carers of deaf children, along with interested members in the Deaf community and anyone who works with or has an interest in deaf children.

Why should I bother to attend?

Unless our members tell us what they want for their children we may end up running events and activities which aren’t that popular. You may feel that you wish to get involved and help out in some way but feel a little unsure or shy of knowing what to say or ask. Or you may also wish to make some comment which you haven’t felt able to at other events. The AGM is a good place to ask a question without feeling daft! Remember – we are all like minded people who want the best for deaf children in Peterborough. So come along and see what happens and how it happens! Will I be expected to go on the Committee?

No! Only if you want to – and if you do want to you will be very welcome. The Committee is comprised of named officers (such as the Chair) and other officers who all agree to take on roles such as running Playscheme or helping to organise activities etc.

How do the elections work?

All the current Committee and officers step down and then the election and re-election process begins. The first officer to be elected is the Chair. A committee member will nominate a person and then another committee member will second them. If more than one person stands for a position the process goes to a vote. If you are interested in finding out more about vacant posts or being on the committee please contact us peterborough@ndcsgroup.org.uk

Is the meeting boring??

No! We all like a bit of a laugh so put the date in your diary now and we hope to see you there.

Communication Support will be provided.
