Music and Deaf concert

Earlier this month the children and young adults from the local Music and the Deaf group performed their summer concert at Jack Hunt School. The group have been playing together one Saturday a month since late 2012. Parents and any audience members were always involved in any Samba sessions. A great effort by a hard working group.

Peterborough's MatD Summer Concert 6th July

This year, new members as young as 4 joined the Peterborough based Music and the Deaf monthly sessions. Co-ordinated by Lin from Cambridge Music, the group have developed their skills and talents. On 6th July, 11-12 noon, the children will showcase their work at Jack Hunt School at a simple summer concert.

At the end of last year, as part of the NDCS Stolen Futures campaign, young deaf students from Peterborough and Cambridgeshire met Evelyn Glennie and enjoyed a tour of her work space. The students have been nurturing their natural curiosity for music and were representing the importance of saving services such as Music and the Deaf.

Dame Evelyn Glennie, an internationally acclaimed percussionist and a NDCS Vice President, has been profoundly deaf since the age of twelve. She is passionate about musical education and is an advocate for wider participation in music by children and adults of all abilities.






A growing number of young people have been involved with the local Music and the Deaf sessions since it started in Peterborough 18 months ago. New members, of any skill level, are always welcomed.

Children as young as 4 years old have joined, with their parents supervision during all sessions. The MatD sessions take place on a Saturday morning, on a monthly basis, at Jack Hunt School with the support of Cambridge music.


Students are encouraged to develop their musical abilities outside of the MatD sessions. Those young people who can't commit to the sessions are praised for any extra music lessons they attend to allow their musical interest to grow. We wish all the young people the best of luck with their musical talents.

Celebrity support for NDCS Stolen Futures Campaign

At the end of last year, Music and the Deaf members and some PDDCS youth members were invited to be involved in the NDCS Stolen Futures film which is part of their National Campaign to stop cuts to deaf education. The young people spent the day with Evelyn Glennie, musician and NDCS Vice President, learning about her musical instruments, her career and education experiences. It was rather exciting for those young people who had seen her play live, just a few weeks prior to the filming invite.

Alongside Evelyn Glennie, the campaign clip features Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter, Scarlett Johnson of Pramface fame and Paralympic medallist Ben Rushgrove sharing their views on cuts to services for deaf children. The NDCS are asking for your support to protect the future of deaf education, which has made some changes over the decades, by signing their petition.

Daniel's debut musical performance

Last Saturday Daniel and his sister, Leah, travelled with their mum to Folkestone to perform a short musical piece. What is so impressive is Daniel is only 5 years old, one of the youngest members of the Music and the Deaf (MatD) group currently running in Peterborough.  MatD started in Peterborough in September 2011 and has encouraged many young deaf people to discover and develop some superb musical talents.

Daniel started learning the violin three months ago after being inspired at the Evelyn Glennie concert in Leicester. Accompanied by his slightly older and very supportive sister, Daniel travelled 3 hours before his first public performance. So, why Folkestone? Well the Lions charity have been a very active supporter of Music and the Deaf (MatD). One of their governors, who is also a governors MATD, invited Peterborough MatD members to attend their convention as they are considering setting up a Deaf Youth Orchestra in Brighton starting in September 2013.

Daniel and Leah played some short pieces after a very dynamic and inspirational talk from Dr. Paul Whittaker OBE.

We look forward to further details about the 25th anniversary MatD 'Gods,Goddesses and MagicalCreatures' celebrations this July, in Birmingham.

PDDCS members meet Evelyn Glennie

Following her performance at the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, PDDCS posted details about Evelyn Glennie playing at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall as part of DaDaFest 2012.

When PDDCS learned that the world renowned percussionist would be playing with the Leicester Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the Orchestra’s 90th anniversary,  a trip was arranged to see her perform. The whole evening was outstanding. Many of the young people and families from Music and the Deaf and PDDCS attended. As they watched the orchestra play the young people could envisage where their musical adventures and experiences might lead them.

Evelyn's performance was simply extraordinary. She must have been exhausted from all the drumming and bagpipe playing. Nevertheless Evelyn took the time, at the end of the night, to sign autographs for many very satisfied audience members.

It was a superb event. A night to remember. The expression on Daniels's face says it all, doesn't it?

Music for deaf children to tour Europe

The Guardian has a story about how a french orchestra has launched a programme to help teach deaf children about music with great results..

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra's musicians have taken deaf children under their wing and launched 'Feel the Music' which they hope will take off across Europe. You can read the full story here.

The MCO have already teamed up with Paul Whittaker, who set-up UK Charity Music and the Deaf. Of Course, here in Cambridgeshire, we already have our own Music and the Deaf sessions every month at the Jack Hunt School! Come along and see what all the fuss (across Europe) is about.

Dame Evelyn Glennie - PDDCS event

Exciting news!!

The PDDCS are arranging a trip to see Dame Evelyn Glennie, the internationally acclaimed percussionist. She is performing with the Leicester Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the Orchestra’s 90th anniversary on Saturday 10th November at 7.30. However there will be a free pre-concert talk with Dame Evelyn Glennie at 6.30.

The Peterborough Music Hub are funding towards a coach.

So if you wish to enjoy an evening of inspirational music with coach transport provided (coach departing Jack Hunt School at 5pm) then

This September Music and the Deaf begun it's second year in Peterborough with a revised session structure. The new sessions which include Signed Songs and Samba have proved to a great hit with the current members.

Cambridgeshire Music and Music and the Deaf have confirmed that despite funding cuts, the Deaf Youth Orchestra sessions in Peterborough will continue. The students recently performed their first public performance which was a success. New members are always welcome.

Deaf Role Model - Danny Lane visits Peterborough

Today Danny Lane, the Education Manager from the Music and the Deaf organisation, visited our monthly Music and the Deaf sessions which are run by Cambridgeshire Music. Danny, who has amazing music talent, expressed how impressed he was with the skill and commitment of all the young people (50% of whom travel from Cambridge to attend these sessions). He also thanks the dedication and support of the parents and adults who help make these sessions happen.
